I’ve been a plant parent for many years, and I’ve killed more plants than I care to admit. In college, I didn’t realize how important proper care was, especially when you’re broke and can’t afford to replace every plant you accidentally send to the big greenhouse in the sky.
After a few too many sad, crispy leaves, I finally started researching the right products and care habits for my plants. I’m still no expert (and yes, sometimes I forget to water them), but I’ve learned which tools and products let my plants be a little more self-sufficient. Today I’m sharing the items that completely changed the game for my Monstera Deliciosa, my pride and joy, and the plant I’ve kept alive the longest.

My Monstera Story
My Monstera Deliciosa is the plant I’ve had the longest—I bought it in college and still have it today. At one point, I almost killed it until my mother-in-law insisted that all it needed was a bigger pot and some outdoor air. She was right. Once I gave it more space, my Monstera turned into an absolute monster.
The aerial roots started creeping out of the pot, even trying to attach to the floor (FYI: you can trim those). The leaves grew in every direction, and instead of bringing joy, it became something I had to awkwardly walk around. Eventually, I gave it a major haircut. I propagated pieces, repotted the large stalks, and shared cuttings with friends and family. Now it’s in the recovery stage and slowly getting bushier.

1. Moss Poles (The #1 Must-Have)
Your Monstera needs something to climb as it matures—otherwise, it will sprawl out and take over your living room.
My Favorite Moss Pole (Expandable + Sturdy)
This one has been the best for my large Monstera. It stacks as your plant grows, and the material is strong enough to actually hold shape.
Flexible Bendable Moss Pole (For Smaller Monsteras)
I’ve tried this one too—it’s very flexible and cute, but a bigger Monstera will bulldoze it. Great for younger or smaller plants.
2. Plant Ties (Leaf Control Made Easy)
If your Monstera leaves stick out at weird angles, these velcro ties are a lifesaver. You can cut them to any length and reposition them anytime.
3. Monstera Leaf-Shaped Rings (Cute + Functional)

4. Fertilizers That Actually Work
For Propagation (Water or Soil)
If you’re growing new roots, this Espoma Organic Concentrate works FAST. Just a heads up—it has a funky smell, but the results are worth it.
For Regular Watering
For established plants, I use Miracle-Gro’s Tropical Houseplant Food. I add it to my watering can every few waterings when my Monstera needs a boost.

Monsteras like to stay slightly moist not soggy. A moisture meter takes the guesswork out of watering and prevents root rot.
